The rest are subtleties that show themselves through exposure. You have to be around people to know what they do or don't look like.They don't look alike. Once you know someone who is Chinese and someone who is Japanese you can just tell. On average, japanese are shorter, have wider eyes and more fine features of the face, tend to dress more expensively, and act more snobbish. I.e. Japanese are more metropolitan, and Chinese - more provincial.

If you ask any detective that's interviewed eye witnesses, he will tell you that if 10 people give a description of someone you're likely to get at least 8 different descriptions. That is NOT a description of someone of another race; it's whites describing whites, blacks describing blacks etc. Granted if there is some very unusual physical charateristic people will notice. But for the most part untrained observers have very little ability to notice deferientation between people they dont personally know. So to think that the inability to tell people of other races apart is due to anything more than being unobservant is unrealistic.
